なんでそんなことが起きるんだろう？

　どうして賢いハッカーが、ダメな商売のアイデアを持ってくるんだろう？ 私たちのケースで言おう。ダメなアイデアに固執した1つ目の理由は、それは私たちが最初に思いついたアイデアだったからだ。当時、私は貧しき芸術家になろうとしながらニューヨークにいて（まあ「貧しき」は簡単に達成できたんだけどさ）、ギャラリーにたびたび行っていた。私がウェブのことを知ったとき、2つを結びつけるのは自然に思えた。ギャラリー経営者のためにサイトを作る・・・これこそ黄金の鍵だ!

「何年間も仕事をするつもりなら、最初のアイデアに飛びつく前に、少なくとも数日は別のアイデアの検討に費やしたほうがいい」って思うかもしれないね。「あなたは」そう考えるんだろう。でも一般的な人々はそうじゃないんだ。実際これは静物画を描くとき、よくある問題だ。あなたはテーブルの上にいろんな物をどさどさ置き、よさそうに見えるまで多分5分か10分を、配置に費やす。でもとても気がせいていて、はやく描き始めたい。最初の10分の並べ替えをすごく長く感じる。だから、あなたは描き始めてしまう。3日後。20時間も静物をじっと眺め続けたあとで、なんてぶざまで平凡な構成にしてしまったんだろうと、自分を蹴りとばしたくなるけど、もう手遅れ。
